The Memorial
One hundred years lie between the inauguration of the memorial to the fallen of the First World War and its second extension, which now commemorates victims of war and Nazi rule who were not yet visible there.
On 16 August 1925, the memorial to the village’s sons who died in the Great War is dedicated in the new Ramlingen cemetery (which has also just been established). A soldered lead capsule containing documents, maps, inflation money, and war cards from the years 1916-1922 is walled in under the stone steel helmet.

On 12 June 1955, ten years after the end of the Second World War, the memorial plaques for the fallen and missing are dedicated at the memorial in the Ramlingen cemetery. This first expansion is largely organised by the local warriors’ association, the ‘Kyffhäuserbund’.

In 2016, the large boulder with the inscription ‘Thanks from the homeland’ had to be removed from the fieldstone tower due to its dilapidated construction. The debate about the necessary renovation of the memorial also triggers an initial initiative to expand the memorial ‘to include insights from today’s perspective’ (according to the motion text from 2019). The Burgdorf administration is tasked with developing a proposal.
Just like the renovation project, the development of a proposal by the administration drags on for several years without any results.

In November 2022, a local council motion by the SPD formulates a concept for a possible memorial extension developed by local councillor Sven Voigt for the first time, setting the target date of 8 May 2025 for the realisation of the project. The motion is passed unanimously by the local council, approved by the city council and the administrative committee and a budget of 25,000 euros for the construction of the extension is then included in the 2023/24 double budget.

Following intensive preparations, construction work on the extension begins on 15 April 2025 and is successfully completed on 30 April.

On 8 May 2025, the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, the second extension to the memorial is officially inaugurated.
